Many started the New Year out with great intentions – plans to work out, eat healthy and be good to themselves overall. As we enter Heart Health Month, let’s keep that going with these steps to strengthen our heart health!

#1: Have A Plan

One way people wreck their healthy agenda is by being unprepared. We have busier days or weeks than we expect and before you know it, we’re eating fast food. Pick a scheduled time each week to do your meal planning and grocery shopping and your fast food excuses will right out the window.

#2: Pick “Good For You” Foods

It’s no shocker that a light meal like a tuna salad is better for you and your heart than a greasy burger. At home and at work, you should have your food and snack supplies stocked with good-for-you options, making February and beyond heart healthy.

And if you simply must have a guilty pleasure item – make yourself work for it! If you have to go out to find and buy it, you’ll probably be less likely to go get it. Also, there’s nothing wrong with substitutions! Whatever it is you are craving, there is very well a healthy alternative for it that you can whip up in the kitchen: almonds over chips, fruit salad over candy, or Albacore tuna in a pouch over pizza.

#3: Get Creative

Say you make it to mid-February and you’re getting bored. You miss your naughty cravings and you’re about to cave… Well hey, we get it! Who enjoys eating the same exact salad or sandwich every single day, for weeks on end?

Solution? Be creative with your food! For example, StarKist® Albacore White Tuna is a flavorful and versatile option for meal-prep. Not only is it a delicious and heart healthy meal, it’s also easy to make and eat when you are on the go thanks to canned and convenient pouch options.

In the mornings, I love to put together a simple salad with greens, avocado and tuna. Just keep some balsamic vinegar or lemon juice at your office and dress it when you’re ready to eat! Need a fast dinner idea? Try tuna salad sandwiches, mixing the tuna with a little olive oil and lemon juice instead of mayonnaise. Or try serving tuna pita pockets with hummus and greens for a meal packed with protein. See? So many options.

Great to know: StarKist® Albacore White Tuna is a natural source of omega-3’s and is certified by the American Heart Association. Not only are you serving your family a flavorful meal, you’re doing their hearts a favor too.

With these steps in mind, you’re prepped for a very heart healthy February. P.S. Who says you have to stop at the end of the month? Let’s keep this going all year!
