Even if you don't consider yourself a geek or a nerd, AI and the IoT - or artificial intelligence and the internet of things respectively - are pretty exciting for everyone, simply because they'll make your everyday life that much better and even more fun.

The concept of using AI or artificial intelligence might seem like it’s essentially science fiction, or something that’s too far in the future to be of immediate use or even interest to you, unless you’re the type of uber-geek who loves to daydream about what life will be like in next 100 or 1000 years (guilty as charged). Ditto for the internet of things or the IoT.

However, the future is closer than you think, and AI and IoT might already be part of your home and daily life. Here’s how and why...

So What Is AI? And Why Should You Care?

When you think of artificial intelligence in the home, you probably think of robots like Rosie the Robot maid from the Jetsons. Or perhaps your smart home technology or any other useful gadgets that you’ve tricked out your home with. Basically, you're probably picturing something futuristic straight out of a science fiction movie.

However, AI covers a lot more than just your friendly household robot. Defined as “the theory and development of computer systems able to perform tasks that normally require human intelligence, such as visual perception, speech recognition, decision-making, and translation between languages.” For instance, Google Translate, Siri, and Waze all involve AI, and you probably don’t even think about them in that sense!

And So What’s The Internet Of Things?

Officially defined as “a proposed development of the Internet in which everyday objects have network connectivity, allowing them to send and receive data.”, the internet of things or IoT can be summed in a relatively simple way, in the sense that it encompasses all of the devices that can send and receive data via the web.

Essentially, the IoT is a term that describes all of the things or the little ways that technology makes our lives better on a daily basis, from AppleTV or Roku remembering where we were in our latest binge watch to our thermostats automatically adjusting depending on the time of day, temperatures outside, and personal preferences. Essentially, you can optimize and quantify most of your daily activities.

Still doesn’t seem relevant? It’s been predicted that we’ll have about 24 billion devices connected to the IoT by 2020 - so there’s certainly no denying that it will be part of your life!

You Already Use These Technologies.

AI has already become part of your everyday life if you use virtually any type of modern technology, but particularly Siri, Google Assistant, or Alexa. However, these AI-centric devices aren’t the only ways that artificial intelligence has infiltrated your daily life; in fact, plenty of devices use artificial intelligence to steadily improve the experience for you, the end user. Depending on the appliances and apps that you already use, you’re essentially feeding the AI machines data - or knowledge - about you that they can use to further refine and optimize your experience with them.

Getting Pumped For The Brave New World.

And that’s exactly why you should care and even more importantly, why you should actually be pretty excited for artificial intelligence and the internet of things. Not only is there the ultra-cool geeky side of things, but these technologies will actually make your life easier in so many different ways. And what’s more - we’re only at the beginning of AI and the IoT becoming part of all of our daily lives. Just think of what we’ll have in ten, five, or even just one year from now!
