Actress Amber Heard has filed for divorce from actor Johnny Depp amid allegations that Depp physically abused her. They have been married for 15 months.
Heard received criticism for filing for divorce days after Depp’s mother passed away, which forced the actress to come forward and obtain a restraining order against the actor as well as file a full police report detailing the abuse.
Heard appeared in court the Friday before Memorial Day weekend with a visible bruise on her face, alleging that Depp threw an iPhone at her face last Saturday and a month before “grabbed [her] by the hair and violently shove [her] to the floor”. She was granted a temporary restraining order against Depp. This followed a previous altercation in mid May, when police were called to their home. No charges were filed after that incident.
Heard said she didn’t previously release a statement to the LAPD in order to protect her privacy and Depp’s acting career. Heard’s lawyer, Samantha F. Spector, released a statement saying in part, “Amber acted no differently than many victims of domestic violence, who think first of the harm that might come to the abuser, rather than the abuse they have already suffered.”
