As news of Angelina Jolie quitting acting is taking the entertainment world by storm, WomensForum is celebrating Angelina Jolie’s 10 best film roles over the years. Narrowing down the famed actress’ best characters down to a few was not an easy task... but it's quite a stroll down cinema memory lane.
10. A Mighty Heart
Jolie was nominated for a Screen Actors Guild for Outstanding Leading Female Actor and a Golden Globe Award for Best Actress in a Motion Picture Drama for her role in A Mighty Heart. A true story, Jolie played the wife of Wall Street Journal reporter Daniel Pearl who was kidnapped in 2002 and later beheaded by supporters of Omar Sheikh in Karachi.
Jolie starred in the 1998 HBO biographical film about model Gia Marie Carangi. Another true story, model Gia was a model in Pennsylvania who died at the age of 26 from AIDS-related complications. Jolie won the SAG award for Outstanding Female Actor in a Miniseries or TV movie and won the Golden Globe Award for Best Actress in a Miniseries or TV Film.
8. Lara Croft: Tomb Raider
We can’t leave out Jolie’s butt-kicking roles as well. Known to most as Tomb Raider, Jolie starred in the 2001 action film based on the video game series. Jolie played Lara Croft alongside her dad Jon Voight who also had a role in the movie as Lord Richard Croft, her father.
The 2010 action thriller spy film starred Angelina Jolie and Liev Schreiber. Evelyn Salt, played by Jolie, is under suspicion of being an American spy as she is being held hostage in a North Korean prison. The film received an Academy Award nomination for Best Sound Mixing. In 2011, rumors of a sequel began buzzing and Jolie said only "if it comes together right."
6. Kung Fu Panda
With four young children and twins on the way, Angie was excited to play a role that her children could appreciate. Jolie played Tigress, tiger leader of the Furious Five. Jolie starred in the original and again in the 2011 sequel. The third installment is set to be released in 2015.
Clint Eastwood co-produced the 2008 film which starred Angelina Jolie as a mother looking for her son who disappeared. The film featured dark twists and elaborated on violence against children.
Just this year, sweet Angie was portrayed as one of Disney’s most notorious villains - Maleficent. Jolie’s creepy persona even frightened her daughter Vivienne who had a small role in the film as a young Aurora.
3. The Bone Collector
While this 1999 crime thriller didn’t have through the roof reviews, we appreciate Angie’s role as Police Officer Amelia Donaghy trying to locate a serial killer. The ensemble class was pretty unique as well. Denzel Washington played the lead opposite Jolie. Also, Queen Latifah and Ed O’Neill made appearances.
2. Mr. & Mrs. Smith
Of course we wouldn’t leave out Mr. & Mrs. Smith. Besides just being a riveting action film about two sexy assassins trying to kill each other but end up falling in love, the 2005 film is where Angie and Brad fell in love. The two were together almost immediately after the film premiere.
1. Girl, Interrupted
Based on the book by Susanna Kaysen, Girl Interrupted follows the life of Kaysen (Winona Ryder) throughout her 18 month stay in a mental institution. While Kaysen makes friends including characters played bye Elisabeth Moss, Brittnay Murphy and nurse played by Whoopi Goldberg, Angie plays Lisa Rowe. A certified sociopath, Angie’s character creating a chilling experience through the powerful story. She won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress, a Golden Globe and a SAG.
