The beloved Archie will go out heroically.
Archie Andrews first appeared in the 1940s when the first Archie Comic Book was released. Decades later, readers will read of his death and the shocking reason behind it. The freckled-faced icon, after 73 years, will meet his demise jumping in front of an assassin's bullet to protect his gay friend Kevin Keller, the first and only openly gay character in the series. Who saw that coming?
The selfless act will take place in the 36th issue of Life With Archie, which is out July 16. You can view the issue with covers here.
In April, it was announced that Archie will die but the cause of death wasn’t released until now. We’ve read about him and his friends for years and now he will sadly perish, but in a selfless way!
The 37th issue is to focus on all of his Riverdale friends honoring his death. There is no comment on who shot Archie but Archie Comics publisher and co-CEO Jon Goldwater is only teasing that it's a stalker who wanted to kill Keller. Goldwater said they wanted to do something that would be impactful and resonate with the world.
According to sources, the last words Archie speaks are to Betty and Veronica as they stand over his body and he says, "I’ve always loved you."
The Archie Comics company hopes that this comic book issue will "epitomize not only the best of Riverdale but the best of all of us," and that it is "a lesson about gun violence and a declaration of diversity in the new age of Archie Comics."
Alright Archie fans, be sure to grab your copy of Life With Archie this week to find out the whole story!
