We feel like sometimes it’s harder for women to lose weight than men. We've all seen the commercials for diet pills for women and we've probably done our research. But to get the facts straight, we talked to Tammy Foxx, owner of Bridal Fitness Coach. Foxx has the answer and she even threw in some weight loss tips to help you reach your goals. Is it Harder For Women to Lose Weight?
Foxx says it is harder for women to lose weight than it is for men. "In my business I will often train a bride and groom together in preparation for their wedding. In every instance, the groom will lose weight faster than the bride," says Foxx. She says that women are predisposed to store and retain fat. This is because women have higher levels of estrogen, which is a hormone that works to keep the fat on the woman's body, so it's easier for us to get pregnant. "Because of this, we have to work harder to lose weight at the same rate as men," she says.
Muscle is the primary fat burner in the human body. Since men have more muscle than women, they are able to burn a greater amount of fat, she says. Darn! We were hoping this wasn't all true! But, there is hope! And it's so easy! Foxx says it comes down to a balanced diet and regular exercise.
Exercise and Diet Advice
"One additional thing I tell my ladies that I don't have to tell my men is this: 'GET OFF THAT TREADMILL AND PICK UP SOME WEIGHTS' (and I don't mean 2 pound weights either). In my experience, women are afraid to train with weights because they are afraid of bulking up," she says. But ladies, remember, muscle helps burn fat, so go lift! She says you can lose up to 40 percent more by lifting weights and you’ll burn more calories. She says to do resistance training 2 to 3 days per week and cardio 3 to 4 days per week.
“I encourage my clients to eat a balanced diet with plenty of protein such as meats, seafood, eggs, vegetables, fruits and nuts. In my experience, women especially don't eat enough protein,” Foxx says.
Foxx advises eating small meals throughout the day because she says it actually increases your metabolism, which helps you lose weight.
