When Caitlyn Jenner made her debut on the cover of Vanity Fair, she asked the world to "Call me Caitlyn." But if it wasn't for a coincidental conversation with her assistant, she could have just as easily asked the world to "Call me Heather" or "Call me Cathy."
Jenner opened up to Vanity Fair about the process of choosing her name, which she refers to as "One of the hardest things in life."
She revealed that for inspiration she'd watch the Miss America pageant to find a name that fit who she is. Although the name Caitlyn had always stood out to her, It took two years before she made her final choice.
It was actually a random conversation with her assistant, Ronda Kamihira, that helped her come to a decision. When discussion name options, Kamihira independently suggested the name Caitlyn, to which Jenner replied “I love that name, too!” From then on Jenner knew that Caitlyn is her name.
As for deciding to spell her name is a "c" instead of a "k" Jenner told Vanity Fair that she simply decided it was best to break tradition, and the media association that went with the family's famous "k" names.
Jenner will be revealing even more about the changes that came with her transition in her docuseries I Am Cait which premieres on E! this July. For a sneak peek at the series, make sure to watch the trailer below.
