anight_wheezingWhat Causes Wheezing at Night?

Wheezing, phenomena prevalent in many people irrespective of their age group, occurs due to respiratory blockage. Air doesn’t find its way out through exhalation thus leading towards wheezing in the chest. According to some medical practitioners, wheezing may be a symptom of “asthma” in certain people.

Causes of Wheezing

During respiration, expansion in chest takes place which makes big room for air passage during inhalation and exhalation, resulting in easy and normal breathing.  When due to some allergy in chest (asthma or some other disease), or presence of some foreign particles in chest make it bigger for breathing, whistle sound arises, giving rise to wheezing.

Respiratory problems caused by wheezing is not just an adult illness, certain new born or toddlers also come across it.  Frequently occurring symptoms in new born and babies, due to minute nasal allergy or injection of some powdered milk may be the cause. Application of dilute nasal drops is the most appropriate remedy. On the other hand with older kids, toddlers; if it persists respiratory disorder or asthma may be a common cause.

Wheezing in chest normally has two aspects. One occurring due to the presence of any particle in throat, cause windpipe blockage. It makes respiratory path narrow thus air forces to come up, causing wheezing. On the other hand wheezing as a result of lungs infection owing to various diseases also causes disruption in the normal exhalation process. Patients with wheezing in chest have other associated problems also like chest pain, breath shortening, and chest congestion.

Though wheezing is not taken seriously by many people and few consider it hereditary, while there is reason behind wheezing like patient history, thus proper tests and medication is required for treatment. In some people chest wheezing is prevalent during night and early morning. Other most frequently apparent symptoms of wheezing are tightness in chest, fever along with infection, breathing problem, presence of mucous, less oxygen level, raise in heart rate.

Besides, there are certain other diseases which may try to invade like cancer, common cold, pneumonia; from wheezing. Wheezing during exhalation is normally caused by bronchiolar illness. Slow rate also signifies that the breathing flow of an individual is less than 50% as compared to normal respiration. If shortening of breath is also felt apart from wheezing, it may be an alarm of heart (congestive) failure, in which oxygenated blood doesn’t reach all parts of the body.

There is a difference between asthma and wheezing coming from throat. But wheezing is the most common symptom of asthma. The same sound is heard by the doctor when he checks his patients with the help of stethoscope.

It is not to say that all wheezing leads to asthma but some may do. Link between wheezing and asthma depends on the family history of the patient, his own medical history. Average Night wheezing may not be an issue but if it persists for long then doctor should be consulted. At the same time, if patient is already taking medication and still chest wheezing at night persists, it means the medications might not be proving effective and thus needs serious consultation by doctor.
