Is Chris Martin secretly a Katycat? Surprisingly, yes! Except it's no longer a secret. Martin revealed in a new Beat x Beat webcast produced by Beats by Dre, that he was "listening to a lot of Katy Perry" and was inspired by the California Girl while writing Coldplay's hit song "A Sky Full of Stars."
Martin further explained Perry's impact, saying, "A lot of her songs have the same chord sequence the whole time. Your body feels comfortable with them and then the melody's changing on top so there's a groove you really get in to and then also you're kept interested… so I was like, 'that's an amazing way of doing songs.'"
However, Perry wasn't the only artist to inspire the hit song. Martin revealed that Coldplay worked with EDM heavyweight, Avicii in the creation of the song.
"He did a full Avicii version, we did a full Coldplay version, and we spent weeks weaving it all together," said Martin."That song really ended up being inspired by EDM, which some people turn their nose up and then you go to see an EDM thing and people are together and having the best time...I wanted to have a song that comes from that world."
The Katy Perry inspired, Avicii collaborated, Coldplay track has found much success, topping the charts and receiving a ton of radio play. Who would have ever thought that a mix of pop, EDM and alternative rock music could sound so good?
