The Will and Grace and Smash star, 46, has split up with her Smash co-star Will Chase, 44, sources confirm. The two connected and started dating after meeting on the set of their NBC show Smash in 2011, the now-canceled musical drama series.
"Debra Messing and Will Chase have ended their two-and-a-half-year relationship, but remain close friends," Messing’s rep told People Magazine.
The two also played on-screen lovers in the show. No comment has been made yet on why they split up.
"On Broadway, we call it a 'showmance,'" Smash director Michael Mayer said of their relationship."I don't know where Debra and Will would have met [otherwise]. So [Smash] brought them together, and the context of their onscreen relationship, I'm sure that triggered a lot."
They became more and more public with their romance and attended premieres and parties together. Sources say Messing was "completely smitten" with Chase and she also loved acting on the show.
"The amount of fun I'm having on this show is so ridiculous — off the charts already," Messing said in January 2012. "The cast is so accomplished, so committed."
When the two started dating, Chase, who plays Luke Wheeler on Nashville, had recently separated from his wife, Broadway actress Stephanie Gibson. Messing was estranged from her husband of 10 years, Daniel Zelman.
Though Smash has been canceled and the two are no longer dating, their careers seem to be flourishing. The Mysteries of Laura, Messing’s new TV show debuted last month, and Chase still has a recurring role on Nashville since early 2014.
