A little can go a long way. If you swap English muffins for bagels, you could shave off 100 calories from your daily breakfast. If you’re looking to lose a few pounds or just eat healthier, Elyse Wagner (a holistic nutritionist) and Amari Thomsen (a registered dietitian) share some ideas on how to shave calories from your diet.

Amari's Advice

"One soda has 65-grams of sugar (that's neat 1/3 cup). In other words, cut the soda from your diet. One 20-ounce soda has nearly 250 calories. Don’t be fooled by diet sodas either. The artificial sweeteners added to diet sodas can cause increased insulin production in the body and result in unwanted sugar cravings later in the day. Instead of soda, go for sparking water with a fresh lemon or lime. Another easy tip is substituting avocado spread on a sandwich in place of mayonnaise. You can also try spreading almond butter on your morning toast instead of butter for an extra boost of protein and healthy fat!

Focus on whole real foods that are nutrient dense. You don't want energy dense foods, which are commonly found in processed and convenient foods. You'll look and feel better too!"

Amari's Advice

"When building a vegan recipe you want to include protein, colorful fruits, vegetables, healthy fats, and whole grains. Think about a southwestern quinoa salad. Combine whole grain quinoa with black beans, red bell pepper, corn, avocado, lime juice, olive oil, and spices to create a tasty vegan salad!"

Elyse's Advice

"Use an avocado or sweet potato to create a quinoa bowl with chopped avocado, tomato, onion, cilantro, and taco seasoning. Black beans burgers can be made by mashing black beans, sweet potato and green onions and baking for 20 minutes at 350 degrees."

"Many of my clients are most successful in their weight-loss endeavors with a high-protein, low-carbohydrate, and healthy fat approach. Most people looking to slim down struggle with their weight because their carbohydrate consumption doesn’t match their activity level. If you consume a large proportion of carbohydrates on a daily basis, but you aren’t very active, it’s going to be challenging for your body to get rid of weight. I’m also a huge advocate for food quality and encourage my clients to seek out foods that provide the most nutritional bang for their buck. The more vitamins and minerals per calorie, the more nutrient dense the food is.
