DIY-Deoderant-2We've got the ingredients to make your own deodorant and an explanation for why natural sticks are so popular today.

Natural deodorant gets a pretty bad rap for itself. Sure, when you pull the lid off and smell these natural body deodorants, essential oils and herbal scents dance in front of your nostrils. You might think to yourself, “This smells great and it’s safer for me too.”

But, without certain chemicals and ingredients, many people believe natural deodorant just doesn’t work for them with the same intensity of fighting off bad body odor. Several complain they have to reapply the natural stick several times in one day for it to work. Sometimes on really hot, sweaty summer days, the natural stuff is hard to compare to the brands most of us are comfortable with that claim to have a 24-hour safeguard.

The problem most natural deodorants have is the lack of aluminum in them, which creates a force to keep bad-smelling armpits at bay. However, those aluminum ingredients seep into your pores every day when using conventional sticks. There have also been many studies about whether or not aluminum from women's deodorants are linked to particles in breast cancer tumors.

If you are interested in trying a natural deodorant, you can experience some scent-therapy in health stores just by sniffing all the natural herbal scents. But, if you are someone who has not found the natural deodorant that works strong enough for you, here are four ingredients that you can use to make your own deodorant. This cream just might change your whole mind about the let-down of the natural sticks. It works that good (especially if you like the smell of coconuts).

Ingredients for Natural Deodorant

  • Your choice of essential oil (tea tree, eucalyptus, lavender, peppermint, etc.)
  • 1/4 cup of baking soda
  • 6 tbsp coconut oil
  • 1/4 cup of arrowroot: *arrowroot is a gluten-free flour found in most baking sections

Steps for Making Your Own Deodorant 

  1. Combine baking soda and arrowroot together in one bowl.
  2. Add coconut oil and mix together.
  3. Add 2-3 drops of an essential oil, and stir again.
  4. Once the mixture turns into a white smooth cream, the deodorant will be finished. If the cream seems too runny, add more arrowroot. The thicker the mixture, the better since you’ll be applying under your arms like a moisturizer every morning. You can check out the final product in the photo up top!
