What better way to spend time with your children than following an easy, step-by-step play dough recipe with the end result being a toy you can all enjoy together?
To get this easy DIY play dough started, you will need six simple ingredients that are commonly found in any kitchen. The entire process will take around five minutes, meaning a full set of colors can be achieved in a quick half hour!
Homemade Play Dough
- 1 cup flour
- ¼ cup salt
- 2 tbsp cream of tartar
- 2 tbsp vegetable oil
- Gel food coloring
- First, mix all of the dry ingredients together in a medium saucepan. Once mixed, add your wet ingredients, a good amount of the gel food coloring and continue to mix thoroughly. The color that you see is the color it will remain throughout, so add more gel food coloring if a brighter color is desired
- TIP 1: A fun and easy way to let the kids make this play dough their own, is to let them pick the color mixtures themselves.
- Once mixed, place the pan on the stovetop on medium high heat and continue to stir continuously until the consistency becomes chunky. Continue to stir until the mixture is formed into one large play dough ball. From there, take the ball out of the pan and let cool. Once the play dough has cooled, have the kids knead it a bit, and enjoy!
- VARIATIONS: For a fun rendition to this recipe, you can swap the gel food coloring for Kool-Aid to give the play dough a scent! It’s also an easy fix if you don’t have any gel food coloring on hand.
