Most restaurants that serve salads have at least one vinaigrette dressing option. If you go down the condiments aisle in any grocery store, you are likely to pass by several different vinaigrette salad dressing brands and mixtures. This is for a very good reason; vinaigrette dressings are among the most popular and versatile salad dressings. Although vinaigrette dressing is originally a French recipe, it has an appeal that can be found all over the world. There are many different varieties to suit nearly every taste, and they aren't very difficult to make. All that's needed is a good recipe, a few minutes and a little creativity! To this end, Chef Didier has come to share a simple but flavorful vinaigrette recipe that can easily be made at home.

Homemade Vinagrette Salad Dressing

Ingredients:

  • ¼ cup vinegar

  • ¾ cup olive oil

  • 1 tbsp Dijon mustard

  • 2 cloves of chopped garlic

  • Chives

  • Shallots

  • Sun-dried tomatoes (optional)

  • Touch of white wine

  • Salt and pepper, to taste

Directions:

  1. Place ingredients in small container or jar.

  2. Put the lid on and shake it briskly several times until the dressing is well mixed.

  3. Pour it over a salad, and that's it!

Tips And Other Uses for Vinaigrette Dressing

Leave it to the French to come up with something that tastes like it took forever to make but was really done in just a few shakes of a jar! While the 3-to-1 oil-to-vinegar ratio is the most commonly used, some may find that they want their salad dressing to be a more tart or mild, depending on what it's going to be used on. If so, they might play around with the recipe a bit until they find the balance they want. Once the right oil-to-vinegar ratio is reached, other spices can be added to suit the taste.

As Chef Didier suggests, jars of homemade vinaigrette dressing can also make good holiday gifts for friends and family. Even if someone is not much for salad, the fact that a gift was hand-made just for them can mean a lot! This vinaigrette dressing recipe is a fun and easy way to make something truly unique. While it is primarily a salad dressing, a French vinaigrette can also be used as a sauce or marinade for meat. However it is used, it can add its own distinct flavor to any meal.

Stay tuned for more of Chef Didier's classic French recipes. Bon Appetit!
