    Hollywood is notorious for writing weak female characters who are stuck in stereotypical roles, but sometimes shows come along that portray women in more positive and multidimensional roles. These women tell us that we can be strong and independent, and while we might have weaknesses, we can rise above them. Here are several women who are kicking butt and taking names on TV.

    Olivia Benson, Law & Order: SVU

    Olivia Benson is one tough New York City police officer who, over 17 seasons on the show, has risen from detective to lieutenant. Played by Mariska Hargitay, Benson is a tough but understanding cop who constantly fights for justice for the victims of the crimes she investigates. Taylor Swift even named her cat Detective Olivia Benson.

Not only is she a fantastic African-American female lead character (which is still pretty rare these days) the show has been constantly applauded for its real and relatable storylines.

    The sword-wielding and walker butt-kicking Michonne is a fan favorite on AMC’s The Walking Dead. Played by Danai Gurira, Michonne has not only has survived the zombie apocalypse so far, but when we first met her on the show, she was toting around two chained-up walkers to protect herself, and has consistently been a great addition to Rick’s group.
