What should new moms know about exercise?

For most women, exercising while pregnant is completely safe and is recommended to help control weight gain, constipation, minimize the risk of gestational diabetes and help uplift mood and energy level. The current up-to-date recommendation is to exercise moderately at least 30 min per day. Stay away from high contact sports and activities like horseback riding, scuba diving, and downhill skiing. Stay well-hydrated and sip water before, during and after activity. It is important for women to increase hydration while pregnant to at least 10 eight-ounce glasses per day.

What’s the average weight gain for pregnancy and what’s recommended?

There is no "average" weight gain for pregnancy, because the amount of weight gain that is recommended per woman is based on her pre-pregnancy weight, for which there is a large variation. Women should consult with their own physician to discuss what is a healthy weight gain given her starting weight, BMI and expected size of her baby.

For example, women carrying multiples will have a different average weight gain recommendation vs. a woman carrying a single baby or a woman who is already above her recommended BMI. If you have a normal pre-pregnancy weight, the recommendation is for you to gain a total of 25 to 35 lbs. If you are underweight, you should gain 28 to 40 lbs. to have a healthy pregnancy, and if you are overweight you only need to gain 15 to 25 lbs.

How long should it take to lose the baby weight?

Completely variable. Some people never lose it and some by 6 wks. There is no "should lose" it. That just sets up sometimes unrealistic expectations because everyone and their new family are different.
