foods-that-boost-serotoninEating certain foods can help increase serotonin naturally.

Having a serotonin deficiency is commonly linked to signs of depression. Depressive mood disorders can detriment your family and your mental well being. Serotonin is a natural chemical that occurs in our body, but often we don’t create enough. Eating foods that boost serotonin can help. While simply eating foods that elevate serotonin won’t raise your levels, eating foods with tryptophan and folic acid can help your body to absorb more mood boosting serotonin and can help you get to feeling better.

What is Serotonin?

Although most of us know we need serotonin, we don’t know what serotonin is or what serotonin does. Serotonin is a naturally occurring chemical in our bodies that helps regulate mood, appetite, energy, sleep and sexuality. Levels of serotonin and depression are very closely related. When we don’t have enough serotonin in our bodies we can feel depressed and can even develop a depressive mood disorder. Initially doctors thought that is serotonin were prescribed to depressed patients, their depressive mood would subside. Doctors have now learned that in order for serotonin to be absorbed properly we have to eat other foods rich in amino acids tryptophan and folic acid

How to Increase Serotonin

Doctors have researched for years to uncover how to increase serotonin but quickly found that simply eating foods rich in serotonin wouldn’t help patients as the serotonin couldn’t be absorbed and used in the brain. What is tryptophan and what is folic acid you ask? Tryptophan and folic acid are two of the nine essential amino acids our bodies need. By eating amino acids tryptophan and folic acid, the body is able to absorb mood-boosting serotonin more easily. So what foods have serotonin and what foods have tryptophan and folic acid? The answer might please your pallet!

Food with Serotonin

Some of our favorite dishes are chock full of mood-boosting serotonin, tryptophan and folic acid.

  • Chicken
  • Corn
  • Eggs
  • Meat
  • Nuts
  • Whole grain breads
  • Whole grain pastas

Eating these foods will help to boost your mood and increase serotonin levels in your body. Folic acid plays an important role in the absorption of serotonin as well. Foods like black beans, melon, leafy greens and strawberries are jam packed with folic acid and will also aid in raising your serotonin levels.

Serotonin and Depression

Finding out what causes depression can be difficult because so many factors can play a role. The majority of people suffer from symptoms of depression from time to time but individuals exhibiting signs of depression for two weeks or more should talk with their doctor. A natural imbalance in your diet could be causing your depression and eating foods rich in serotonin could go a long way in easing depression symptoms.
