Gardening and Rain Watering

gardening-and-rain-wateringGreen and Clean Gardening Secrets

There are some people that appear to be able to create beautiful gardens and landscapes as if by instinct alone. Then there are the rest of us that feel as though we bumble our way through it.  Aside from wondering about how to get the plants to grow the way we want them to, many also wonder about cheaper and greener ways of doing things. Eco gardening and rain watering is one great way to save money and the earth while helping your garden grow.

Frugal Gardening Watering Tips

Many people have been taught that keeping a nice garden takes time, energy, money, and toxic chemicals. While it is true that maintaining a vigorous vegetable garden does take time and energy, it should not take massive amounts of money and doesn't have to involve harmful chemicals.

Rain Watering

Rain watering, for example, uses less energy and water and gives your garden exactly what it needs. The set up to achieve this is not complex. All a person needs is a container for collecting the rain water along with a lid to keep it covered when not in use. Then use a watering can to disperse the water as needed. If you have a larger garden, check with the local hardware store or lawn and garden specialty store to find out about other ways that you can make use of a hose or drip irrigation system to disperse the rainwater.

Straw Mulch

Gardening and rain watering is just one example of how to be both frugal and green in your landscaping efforts. There are many other ways to go about doing this. Mulching garden with straw is another way that people manage to save money and take care of the environment at the same time. This practice is a natural and cost effective way to help keep the weeds down, and in the off season, it can help to keep the ground warmer and protected from the harsh conditions of winter. In some communities, there is free or low-cost natural mulch available for residents provided they come and pick it up themselves. This mulch is usually made from yard waste picked up in the community throughout the year.

Push Mower

Often, the same neighbors with the seemingly perfect lawns have a trick or two up their sleeves. They may refer you to local lawn care services that specialize in organic or natural lawn care.  While season-long services can be very expensive, a start of season cleanup and treatment for weeds may not be, and can save you a lot of time in the long run. Getting a little extra help can leave you free to use a manual push mower, leaving behind the gas and oil changes. You can avoid using chemical treatments on your lawn as well. There are many cost effective, creative ways to have a wonderful lawn and garden. You just need to do a bit of research and communicate well with those that can help you.

I grew up in Northern Indiana, near the University of Notre Dame.  I have a B.A. in Liberal Arts from Holy Cross College.  Aside from writing I am also a family health educator at Memorial Hospital of South Bend.  I work also as a Birth Doula and Lactation Specialist.  I love providing education and support for growing families.  I find it incredibly rewarding.

I have a husband and two children of my own.  They are three and five years old.  My three year old has Autism.  In addition to running around after them, I have a St. Bernard that I enjoy cuddling with.  I have also in the past worked as a nanny to three children, two of which were special needs.  Long before that, in what almost seems like another lifetime altogether, I worked as a restaurant general manager.
