Fibromyalgia and Essential Nutrients

People who suffer from fibromyalgia will tell you that they would give anything for a cure. Fibromyalgia is a painful nerve condition that causes achiness, unexplained pain and excessive fatigue. Some fibromyalgia sufferers have symptoms so severe they are literally crippling. One ray of hope for victims of this disorder is grapeseed extract. How exactly are grapseed extract and fibromyalgia linked? Read on to find out.

Fibromyalgia Relief

Fibromyalgia syndrome, of FMS, is an often misunderstood disease. Until recently, some people even called it a "fake" or "made up" diagnosis. Part of the reason that FMS is so maligned is because there is no definitive test to determine if a person is suffering from fibromyalgia. The symptoms of FMS are vague and change from person to person. Essentially, a diagnosis of FMS is reached by excluding all the other possible causes for the given symptoms. Symptoms of Fibromyalgia include:

  • Depress or Anxiety
  • Low Pain Threshold
  • Body Aches
  • Unexplained Pains
  • Nerve or Connective Tissue Pain
  • Tender Spots on the Body
  • Abnormal Sleep Patterns
  • Chronic, Incapacitating Fatigue
  • Headaches, Stomach Aches and Abdominal Pain

It's clear that these symptoms could indicate a lot of different things, which is why FMS is so difficult to diagnose. People who suffer with FMS often go years without any formal treatment or medical care for their condition.

Sadly, there is no cure for fibromyalgia. Treatment usually consists of a combination of medications including anti-depressants and muscle relaxants. Physical therapy, massage and dietary restrictions have also been shown to help alleviate the symptoms of fibromyalgia.

One of the most promising fibromyalgia treatments is grapeseed extract. Although medical studies on this herbal treatment have yet to prove it a miracle cure, many FMS sufferers can give anecdotal evidence of its effectiveness in treating the disease.

Scientists aren't positive how grapeseed extract helps people who suffer from fibromyalgia, but many suspect that the proanthocyanidins contained in the extract may be responsible. Proanthocyanidins are powerful antioxidant compounds that combat free radicals in the human body. In other words, they are like garbage men who collect all the bad stuff from human cells and nullify it. The antioxidants in grapeseed extract are more potent than those found in vitamins A, C, and E, the antioxidants that most people are familiar with.

Grapseed extract for fibromyalgia works in three ways. First, the proanthocyanidins have anti-inflammatory properties similar to those found in synthetic drugs like Tylenol and Advil. People with FMS often find that anti-inflammatory agents help to reduce pain and ease aching muscles and joints.

Second, grapeseed extract may improve blood circulation. Blood flow is important to muscle health because it reduces inflammation and delivers important nutrients the muscles need for proper function. People who take grapeseed for FMS notice more flexibility and higher pain thresholds.

Lastly, grapeseed extract protects joints and muscles in the body by preventing breakdown of collagen, the substance that compromises most human connective tissue.

While medical science may still be out on the fence about taking grapeseed extract for fibromyalgia, doctors agree that it is safe to use in recommended dosages. Certainly, taking grapeseed won't hurt or aggravate FMS, so it is worth trying if you suffer from this painful disease. As with any sort of medicinal herb, be sure to consult your doctor before beginning treatment.
