Maintaining Healthy Breasts is a Lifelong Responsibility

Few women are lucky enough to be certain that they can go through life without worrying about breast cancer and keeping healthy breasts.  For the rest of us, we can be thankful that new research comes out every year that gives us more ways to be proactive about our breast health.  As we personalize these new methods and turn them into part of our routine, they become our own proactive healthy breasts habits.

Protect the Health of Your Breasts

The first step in proactively caring for your healthy breasts is diet. So much depends on a woman's diet healthy eating habits.  Every week we learn of a supplement or vitamin that is found to be of importnce. The ones to pay attention to are those considered preventative of illness.  Antioxidants and vitamins can make a difference in your ability to maintain healthy breasts and ward off problems before they begin.

Vitamin D is considered the up-and-coming vitamin for cancer prevention of late.  Researchers have been noticing that many cancer patients have Vitamin D deficiencies and this lead them to create new studies based upon Vitamin D supplementation and deficiency.  The easiest way for the body to absorb Vitamin D is from the sun.  It has been suggested that even 10 minutes of daily sun, if you are wearing a sun screen that is less than 8, will give your body enough Vitamin D.

It's almost ironic that over the last two decades women have been warned to stay out of the sun and considered a tan or exposure to be dangerous for the complexion or worse to be a precursor to cancer of the skin.  So women are wearing makeup and skin conditioners that actually keep the sun's rays from doing thier job to help your body create a steady supply of Vitamin D.

A woman's exposure to the sun is complicated due to the fact that to meet this requirement the sun has to be in a certain position and the at the correct angle for the proper UV rays to meet their target.  So only masters of sun measurement can guarantee that they are getting the proper amount of Vitamin D.  The rest of us will have to find Vitamin D supplements in order to be proactive in caring for our breasts.

Calcium is a mineral that researchers have also suggested may help to protect healthy breasts.  Studies have shown that Vitamin D and calcium seem to work together, so it may be the combination of both that makes it a preventative substance.  Since calcium is important to women for healthy bones anyway, every woman should be ensuring that they are receiving the minimum recommended daily amounts.

The second step in maintaining breast health is genetic testing.  Researchers have found that abnormalities in the genes BRCA1 and BRCA2 can led to breast cancer.  This doesn't mean that an abnormal BRCA1 and BRCA2 guarantees breast cancer.  But learning if you are a carrier of one of these indicators allows you to discuss other healthy breasts preventative measures with your doctor.

Genetic pre-testing is still a new field in woman's health.  Researchers predict that more genes will be revealed in the future that will impact diseases and cancer concerns.  Women should talk to their doctor if  interested in this research.   Some women may even be eligible to learn more about their genetic predispositions by joining research studies in gene testing.

The third step in how to be proactive in caring for healthy breasts is to be aware of your food containers.  What may have started out as a myth is now a reality.  On March 13, 2009, Congress started looking at a bill to ban Bisphenol A (BPA) from food and beverage containers.  This plastics chemical can break down into a form of synthetic estrogen which can cause health problems in women (primarily breast cancer) and in babies.  It is found in the lining of canned foods, in many plastic storage containers, in soda cans, microwavable containers, water bottles, eating utensils and even in some baby bottles.  This chemical gets into the food rapidly once the container has been heated, and it is considered to be very active once it gets into a person's body.  the body is unable to expel this substance and it is harbored in the tissues much as other forms of estrogen.  Our bodies can only be as healthy as the substances that we put into them.  Decreasing extra sources of harmful substances will go a long way in helping woment to maintain healthy breasts.

The fourth step in being proactive in caring for your breasts is to have recommended self and radiologic breast examinations.  Women should be checking their breasts for discernable changes monthly.  In addition, women should visit their doctors every year for a full physical exam.  Women at a high risk for breast cancer and those over the age of 40 are encouraged to have a mammogram every year.  The sooner cancer is caught, the higher the chances are of sending it into remission for good.

The fifth step in how to be proactive in caring for your breast health and appearance is exercise.  Chest and arm exercises can help to tone and lift the breasts.  Since breasts do not contain muscle tissue, the only way to help them is to exercise the muscles around and under the breasts.  Stretching exercises for the chest and arms can even have a positive effect on the skin around the breasts.

The sixth step in how to be proactive in caring for your breasts is maintaining a healthy weight and exercising for overall benefits of flexibility and ease of movement.

These steps also lead to a healthy heart and a healthy body.  Proactive breast health habits can reduce the risks of almost any disease or form of cancer.
