you can take to help in the prevention of developing heart problems.

Heart Health Awareness Month

Heart health awareness month is an excellent way to bring heart health to the attention of women.  You and the women in your life need to understand how important this issue is and “Heart Health Awareness Month” is an effective tool for increasing the knowledge base of all women toward this important issue.  A strong and healthy heart means a longer and healthier life.  As women, the length of life is very important as well as the quality of life.  Women are generally caretakers and as such carry a lot of responsibility.  To be effective in the role of the ‘modern woman’, a healthy heart is paramount.

Ways to Improve Heart Health

Women’s heart health month is an excellent time to take inventory of your overall health, especially that of your heart.  You may find you are doing all that is recommended by the National Research findings or you might need to make some changes in your lifestyle habits to help protect your heart’s health.  Here is the list of secrets to prolonging your life:

  • Exercise – get your body moving!
  • Balanced eating program – include the foods that are rich in vitamins, minerals and antioxidants your body and your heart need.
  • Maintain ‘normal’ body weight – underweight or overweight only means potential health problems.
  • Avoid ingesting toxins like inhaling cigarette smoke – toxins like those found in cigarettes are harmful not only to your lungs but to your heart as well.
  • Regular checkups – make visits to your physician to keep track of your blood sugar levels, cholesterol and blood pressure numbers to be sure they remain in a safe range.

Heart Health Month is a perfect time to make an appointment to have your overall health checked.  Heart disease is considered one of the ‘silent killers’.  You may have warning symptoms and not be aware you have a problem developing.  Here is an incentive for you to consider; a healthy heart can add many extra years to your life that are free of stokes or heart attacks.

Benefits of Heart Health Awareness

The benefits of taking precautions to keep your heart healthy are not only a longer, healthier life span but it is also about the quality of your life especially in your mature years.  Keeping your heart free of disease also decreases the need for expensive medical care and prescriptions especially in your later years.

What is recommended by the experts to maintain a healthy heart?  Exercise and diet are both extremely important.  One half hour of energetic exercise three times a week or forty-five minutes of moderate exercise three times a week accompanied with a healthy eating program is not that difficult to maintain.  Sugar levels should be kept below 100 and blood pressure at least 120 over 80 or lower.  The good news is that when you keep your body moving with regular exercise and eat mainly heart-healthy foods these levels will easily remain under control.

Symptoms of Heart Disease in Women

When you are in your mature years, the symptoms may be very hard to identify because there is little pain which is why heart disease is considered a silent killer so awareness of heart health is mostly possible with the help of doctors and testing. Otherwise, symptoms can include pain in the chest but can also be in other areas like shoulder, teeth, belly area, back, arms, neck and even the jaw.

The pain is a heavy or squeezing type of pressure that can be like a tight band felt around the chest area.  It can be like something sitting on your chest or can even be bad indigestion symptoms.  These are symptoms that could indicate other health issues but normally the pain will continue for more than twenty minutes.  Nitroglycerin and rest will help but will not make the pain disappear.

Other factors can be nausea, cough, dizziness, anxiety, and shortness of breath, palpitations of the heart, sweating or fainting.  If you experience any of these symptoms, especially accompanied with prolonged pain, it is definitely time to consult your physician.
