Getting rid of head lice in the home can be a challenge, especially if the tiny wingless creatures are wriggling through your laundry. But, after the initial head lice infestation, removing head lice is a process that takes time and plenty of hot water.

According to the Center for Disease Control, head lice and other parasites will perish in temperatures of 130 degrees Fahrenheit or 54 degrees Celsius. By setting your washer on the hottest setting, it's highly unlikely those itchy critters will exist beyond the spin cycle.

When the wash is through, place the items in the dryer and leave it on the hottest, longest setting. Not only will this ensure sanitation, it will provide piece of mind for those who came in contact with the contaminated clothes.

When washing and drying is through, iron the clothes on the hottest setting if you feel the need to take sanitation one step further.

Items to Sanitize With Head Lice

  • Blankets
  • Floor Mats
  • Clothes
  • Towels

What if the Items Are Too Delicate?

If the items are old or too fragile to be washed and dried at such high temperatures, try freezing them to get rid of any lice. Simply toss them in a plastic bag or tupperware inside your freezer and leave it shut. While freezing temperatures can kill the creatures, it may take several days depending on the level of humidity inside your environment.

Alternatively, taking your clothes to the dry cleaner can safely remove head lice from any fabric. But make sure to warn the dry cleaner that the clothes are crawling with parasites.
