It is essential for your health to have a personal wellness plan to guide your choices and goals in preserving your health.  If health issues have already been a part of your daily life it's even more important.  Identifying and solving issues begins once you take an honest look at what is and what you would like to be.  Health goals, both short term and long term will give you the boost you need to become more conscious of your daily choices and how they impact your health. 

You may have heard of wellness plans from your insurance company or your work place or gym.  The most important step is to have yours down in writing.  Something that you can refer to as you work toward your goal will help you to visualize the results you want to achieve and the rewards you will give yourself.  It's not difficult and in fact it can be as short or long as you like. But it will take some calculating and a little research and some paper and ink (or a computer file and Exel document if you are so inclined.  In the following article we will lay out the basic components of wellness planning.

How to Write a Wellness Plan

Creating a wellness plan helps to keep your health goals in mind and gives you a plan to follow.  Many people find it easier to maintain their health goals if they write them down and post reminders for themselves on their refrigerator or bedroom mirror. The best intentions can be quickly forgotten if they are not well researched, planned out and then written down.

Types of Wellness Plans

The first step in how to write a wellness plan is to decide if you are going to create a long-term wellness plan, short-term wellness plan, or both.

Long-term wellness plans are personal plans that will focus on your daily health for six months or more. These plans will only change as your health changes or they may change based on new medical research or the results of your lab tests and annual checkups.  Start with information.  Weight and measurements can be part of the information and who doesn't have a goal for those items?

There are also short-term wellness plans. A short-term wellness plan would be one that targets a specific medical problem. For example, a short-term plan would be used to lower cholesterol and then a long-term plan would be created to maintain your cholesterol once you have lowered it. Short-term and long-term wellness plans should be used together for overall personal health care planning.

Wellness Plan Goals and Objectives

The second step for creating a personal a wellness plan is to develop a health goal. Are you at a high risk for cancer because of your family history? Then you may want to develop a prevention and wellness plan. If you are pregnant or planning to get pregnant you may want to develop a healthy pregnancy plan. Long-term wellness plans can even be written to maintain weight or to lose a small amount of weight every month over the course of six months to a year.

Short-term goals are for seasonal conditions or medical problems that you want to change quickly. If you often get colds in the winter, you can develop a short-term wellness plan that you would use when you get a cold. If you have seasonal allergies, then you would develop a plan to help your body fight the allergies. A short-term wellness plan may even have a goal of dropping ten pounds before a wedding that is four months away.

Creating Wellness Steps

The third step in how to write a wellness plan is to create wellness steps that will help you reach your goal. This section should be developed with your doctor or nutritionist, especially if you have a medical condition. Some things that it should include are:

  • Recipes for meals that will help you reach your goal
  • Exercise regimen that can be as simple as taking the stairs at work
  • Herbs or medicines for your symptoms or for prevention
  • Rewards that you will give yourself for staying on the plan

A very important part of this section is the rewards step. It is easier to maintain a health program if you build in rewards from the start. This is especially important if you have had difficulty staying on a diet or exercise program in the past. The rewards should be smaller and more frequent in the beginning with a continuous build up toward a big reward once major goals are reached.  A Spa vacation might be an ultimate reward.  A great haircut or a new pair of earrings might be intermedicate rewards. Just remember - you don't get a reward unless you complete the plan and reach the goals you set for yourself.
