What is the Right Thing for a Parent to Do?
There are two sides to every story. Yes that is a cliché that is as "old as the hills," but the sentiment applies here. Some parents disagree vehemetly with decisions made in some school districts to take matters into their own hands when it comes to addressing teen pregnancy rates and sexually transmitted disease statistics. But parents, even those haven't begun discussing the birds and bees with their thirteen year olds, are upset. They simply, they say, do not want the schools raising their kids. These parents believe that values are learned at home, and the child is better off having one set of people who are invested in the child's life setting the example, rather than a group of institutitionalized professionals who have to oversee a seething mass of teenage hormones interacting on a daily basis. Other parents would have the teachers instill the societal values that their children will need to compete in a rapidly morphing world. So when there are schools giving out condoms to teens, there are some very distinct subgroups of parents out there voicing disagreement or not.

Understanding The Reasons Teens Run Away
Every child does it at one time or another. They feel that the rules at home are getting too restrictive and they say that they are planning to run away. This can happen as young as two, or when the child is on the brink of adulthood, but the reality is still a little painful for the parents. Generally, the child does not feel that s/he is being heard and thus they need to form their own reality so that they can feel secure and independent. This stage (and it can happen multiple times through the child's young life) needs to be addressed before the child becomes a statistic.

"I'm Bored." "What else is there to do?" It may take a little effort on the part of Mom and/or Dad to find the many after school and summer projects for teens that don't involve school or summer camp. During the school year teens spend their whole day in school and many of them don't want an afterschool program that involves doing schoolwork. Most of them will jump at the opportunity to do something a different. Creating an after school project or a summer project for teens and allowing your teens to participate in a service learning program can help them in their future. How many of us have filled out a job application and have seen the section on volunteer and community activities? What will your kids have to put into that important job application? Having a good answer to this question can be the difference between getting a job and not getting one. Your teen's use of spare time can become a valuable asset to his or her future.
