College is About Who You Meet as Much as What You Learn

The biggest reason starting college is such a challenge for some freshmen is that they find themselves outside their comfort zones.  The sweet predictability of high school is out the window.  Everything you have grown accustomed to in high school has changed.  But it's ok to feel out of your comfort zone, in fact it can lead to new horizons and growth.  It is a natural emotion that most freshmen in college feel, especially on the first day they step onto campus.  Since you can't take all your high school friends to college, making new friends will probably be at the top of your "new life at college" list.

New Freedoms Bring New Temptations in College

College offers most freshmen an exciting new life that feels, finally, to be free of parental control.  A student's initial interpretation of college living - is that there will be uninhibited freedom to explore and experiment with a number extracurricular activities not found in their old high school.  Sometimes this will include a busy lifestyle partaking of parties and drugs.  This is the core cause for concern and sleep loss in many parents.  If you have a child going away to college, you know what we're talking about.  According to the U.S. Department of Education, 35% of the new freshmen population will comprise the bulk of new drug users and potential drug abusers on college campuses.

College Campus Safety

college-campus-safetyHow Safe is Your Freshman's College Campus?

One of the widest overlooked factors when deciding what college to apply to is College Campus Safety.  It's as if this aspect of college is taken for granted by both parent and prospective freshmen!  While it's a know fact every college campus has in-house security and on-duty patrol officers, it's still important to investigate overall campus crime statistics and the prevalence of crime on campus.

Assuming just because there's campus security means there's no campus crime is negligent at best!   However, it would behoove parents know that statically overall 100% of college campuses have at least a 1 - 15% crime rate among minor offences such as theft, vandalism and burglary.  And 25% of the college campuses have a 2-9% campus crime rate involving college student rape and assault and battery.

College Funds Are Looking Skimpier

The best way to teach anybody anything is as early as possible. That may sound like bad grammar (and from such an excellent writer too; mores the pity), but I actually meant to say it that way. As early as possible is the best way to teach someone a life lesson. Sit them down while they are in the crib and expound on politics, religion and finance. They may not heed what you are saying, but they will like the way you get animated when discussing the current rogue in Washington.

Stress:  If You Are Starting College Away From Home, You Can Count On It!

For the freshman college student, especially the one that goes away to college, the amount of stress is, in some cases, staggering.  Stress and college students unfortunately go together.  But knowing what your college student might be facing could be helpful for both you and yours.

Realize that stress is a natural part of the life of college students and in general a part of growing up.  Believing that it can be avoided or ignored is not realistic.  . But knowing how college students successfully cope with stress may give you the tools to assist your college student.  In many cases though, just offering an ear without judgement or the need to fix things for them is going to be the most helpful thing you can do.

Parenting Your Adult Child
adviceBuilding a New Relationship

There's no doubt having adult children is a different world entirely!  As parents we like to think our job is done or it gets easier once the kids are grown.   Contrary to what most parents believe, establishing a parental role after the children are grown is more arduous and quite fragile, if approached incorrectly.  In a sense our roles drastically shift from being the sheltering parent with all the control to the parental bystander waiting for our chance to offer advice or help when needed (and sometimes when they don't need it!).
