It’s been revealed that Mad Men star Jon Hamm has recently completed treatment for alcoholic addiction, according to his publicist. The news comes as Hamm’s character Don Draper makes a return for the final series of the show that is based around an advertising agency set in the 1960's (
Hamm confirmed the news via his publicist Annett Wolf who released a statement today. The 44-year-old actor asked for "privacy and sensitivity" following the news.
While it remains unconfirmed when the star sought treatment and how long the treatment lasted, his publicist stated that he sought help with the support of his long-time partner, fellow actress and filmmaker Jennifer Westfeldt.
In perhaps a case of art imitating life, Hamm plays the role of Don Draper, a troubled advertising executive with drinking problems of his own. Hamm has played the role for the past seven seasons of the popular show, and he has received repeated Emmy nominations for his performances.
However, Hamm has stated in the past that there are few similarities between him and on his screen character, telling British newspaper The Observer back in 2013, "I’m not that methody. I am very cognizant that I am playing a character. Don Draper is a pretty dismal, despicable guy, so why I would want to take him home with me, I don’t know."
While his publicist has only confirmed that the star sought treatment and hasn't released further information, TMZ who initially broke the news reported that the Golden Globe-winning actor was treated for a month at the Silver Hill Hospital in New Canaan, Connecticut.
