Edward Snowden made headlines last year for leaking NSA-related information. His story sparked debates over government secrecy and mass surveillance. Now the ex-CIA computer professional will be played by Joseph Gordon-Levitt in an upcoming biopic.
Rumors about the Dark Knight Rises star playing Snowden have been stirring since September, but were finally confirmed by producers on Monday.
Two time Academy Award winner Oliver Stone will be directing and writing the film, basing the screenplay off of two books written about Snowden: The Snowden Files: The Inside Story of the World’s Most Wanted Man by Guardian reporter Luke Harding and Time of the Octopus by Anatoly Kucherena.
Stone will add the Snowden biopic to his long list of other political films, including JFK, Nixon, Platoon, Born on the Fourth of July, Heaven & Earth, and W. Based on his experience, the director has been seeking independent production companies to avoid any kind of political backlash.
The Snowden biopic is set to start filming in Munich, Germany in January 2015.
