The 2015 MTV VMAs will go down in history as one of the most eclectic and internet-breaking award shows of all time. The night was ripe with celebrity feuds and makeups, scantily clad clothing and best of all, Kanye West.
As the recipient of the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award last night, Kanye had the entertaining opportunity to get on stage and share a few of his thoughts with a crowd of millions.
Kanye, not known for being too humble or gracious, broke character a bit when he thanked Taylor Swift, and expressed how her music helps him connect with his daughter and overcome negativity in his own life.
"I think about when I'm in the grocery store with my daughter and I have a really great conversation about fresh juice, you know, and at the end they say, 'You're not that bad after all.' And I think about it sometimes, like it crosses my mind when I go to a baseball game and 60,000 people boo me. It crosses my mind a little bit."
He then, like any mature adult, reflected back on his choices in recent years, wondering if he'd made some bad decisions along the way.
"Would I have worn a leather shirt? Would I have drank half a bottle of Hennessy and given the rest to the audience? Y'all know you drank that bottle too. If I had a daughter at that time, would I have went on stage and grabbed the mic from someone else's..."
Kanye even took a minute to acknowledge how his own words have gotten him into some trouble in the past, and almost seemed apologetic and humble, before he compared himself to a martyr and gave himself credit for some of MTV's success.
"Sometimes I feel like I died for the artist's opinion...You know how many times MTV ran that footage again? 'Cause it got them more ratings. You know how many times they announced that Taylor was gonna give me the award? 'Cause it got them more ratings. Listen to the kids, bro."
In classic Kanye form, he doubled down on his own attitude, giving us all a reminder of the "fearless" character we can expect from him.
"Y'all might be thinking right now, 'I wonder, did he smoke something before he came here?' The answer is yes, I rolled up a little something to knock the edge off. I don't know what's gonna happen tonight. I don't know what's gonna happen tomorrow, bro."
And just when you thought the speech couldn't be anymore Kanye, he gave us the most memorable moment of the entire night:
If the 2015 MTV VMAs had not broken the internet already, Kim Kardashian West's hubby announcing he'd run for president in 2020 certainly did.
