Find out how Project Runway contestant Kate Pankoke got her start in fashion.
As a season 11 and season 12 contestant on Project Runway, Kate Pankoke is sort of a vet. We got the opportunity to meet up with her and learn how she got her start in fashion.
Fashion Designer Kate Pankoke
Kate Pankoke, the season 11 and 12 Project Runway contestant, credits her controlling personality for leading her to a career in fashion. She used to make her own clothes because she could never find anything that was exactly what she wanted. Classmates would ask her where she got her clothes, and she realized she had a gift. She figured she’d make a living out of doing what she loved: fashion designing.
Pankoke majored in fashion design in college. When it was about time for her to graduate, she decided she’d take the entrepreneurial route and start her own line instead of working for an already established designer. If she could do it all over again, Pankoke said she go to college, but she’d major in something else. Pankoke said the designing is something that comes naturally to her, like many other artists. But, it’s the business side that she struggled with.
For the future, Pankoke sees herself expanding her bridal line (Elaya Vaughn) and collection, but plans to make ready-to-wear clothes and lingerie. Sexy is a comfortable feature for her, as shown in her bridal gowns, so she wants to take it to the next level.
Fun fact: Who would she love to design for? Scarlett Johansson!
Are you an aspiring designer? Pankoke’s advice to aspiring designers is to follow your dreams. Make sure it’s what you want because it’s a lot of work, but it’s also rewarding.
