Could you eat one kind of food for a quarter century?
What if it was pizza? One Maryland man has eaten nothing but cheese pizza for the last 25 years. It’s not a diet for those with an aversion to dairy and gluten. Yet for this diabetic vegetarian, it’s apparently working.
Dan Janssen, a 38-year-old woodworker in Maryland, claims that he’s had no serious health concerns from doctors. He does have diabetes and occasionally passes out when his blood sugar level drops. Yet Janssen insists pizza is not the issue. He really has few qualms with his cheesy diet aside from the limited selection of restaurants to take his girlfriend to.
"Even though I sound like a horribly unhealthy and fat person, I'm not. I'm thin. I have tons of energy, and I feel great every day, so there might be something to the exclusive pizza diet," he told Justin Levy of Vice.com.
Janssen credits his desire to become a vegetarian yet hatred of vegetables combined with his unusual love of pizza for sparking his dietary decision, along with a few traumatic food memories.
It’s not a diet for the faintest of stomachs but Janssen seems to think it’s working, though he’s hoping to one day venture outside of the crust, cheese and tomato sauce.
The big question for a man who has eaten only pizza more than two decades? Where to find the best pizza. His answer? Pontillo's in New York, though he may get some challengers from Chicago hoping to change his mind.
