Turning a musical into a movie is no easy feat, but the upcoming film Into the Woods appears to bring big screen magic.
With a star-studded cast including Meryl Streep, Johnny Depp, Emily Blunt, Chris Pine and many others, the film’s latest trailer appears to stay true to the story while creating a remarkable fantasy world.
"When we set out to write this story we wanted to do something that was fun," said Author James Alpine.
From the director of Chicago and producer of Wicked, it would appear the film is destined for glory.
"What’s so beautiful about this piece is it’s not just a musical, it’s not just a comedy, it’s not just a drama, it’s all of those things interwoven," said Director Rob Marshall.
Even some of the cast members are veterans of the musical-turned-movie realm. Meryl Streep, for example, has starred in the film Mamma Mia!
"[Marshall’s] approach is very pure and he’s out there to make something beautiful," Streep says in the trailer. "Nobody ever gets a chance to play this kind of heightened reality, fantasy, fairytale, married to a beautiful, beautiful score."
The soundtrack for the upcoming movie was done by Stephen Sondheim, who says "it sounds great" but expects it to be "spectacular" when heard at a theater.
The story follows a series of fairytale characters who go "into the woods" to try to get their wishes, along the way trying to outdo each other and push themselves further and further into the woods.
"The theme very much is careful what you wish for you should just look at what you have rather than what you want because the repercussions of that can be quite dangerous," said actress Emily Blunt.
The movie is set to premiere in theaters Dec. 25.
