This sweet viral video shows a glimmer of hope for one daughter as her mother recognizes her.
Alzheimer’s Disease is the most common form of dementia. As the disease progressively worsens, Alzheimer's patients are unable to recognize friends, family and even themselves. While this disease is heartbreaking to watch, Georgia native Kelly Gunderson caught on tape one miraculous moment when her 87 year-old mother recognized her.
The video shows Kelly lying in a hospital beside her mother. For a brief moment, the older woman was able to reflect and recognize her.
It’s clear to see that the 87-year-old mother knows who is next to her. Kelly says, "Do you think that I would lay here with just anybody?"
Her mother says, "No. I think you want to have to love them if they want to." Kelly follows up by asking her mother if she knows who she is. And in an instant, her mother responds, "Kelly." The mother continues to tell her daughter that she loves her and proudly declares that she named her Kelly.
According to The Alzheimer's Association, more than 5 million Americans are living with Alzheimer's disease, which affects memory, thinking, and behavior. Though it progressively worsens, there can be these moments like that between Kelly and her mother where they got to share joy and a break from the disease.
