Natural Antacid Food

natural-antacid-foodDo You Suffer from Heartburn?

If so, you are not alone. It is estimated that 15 million people suffer from heartburn every week. Many people choose to use an over-the-counter antacid or prescription medicine to control their heartburn but did you know that you can control it by eating natural antacid foods?  If you are tired of putting up with the awful burning and churning sensations you have been feeling after eating even the most harmless foods,

it's time to get to the root of the problem with indigestion.  If that awful burning sensation feels like it's coming up to your ears and seriously affecting your ability to concentrate right after eating, it's time to make a doctor's appointment and make sure that you are not dealing with a seriously dangerous case of acid reflux.  An overabundance of acid can lead to cell abnormalities in your esophagael lining and other parts of the stomach.  If, however, it's more an on and off discomfort, and you currently believe that you only need help with periodic symptoms you may see improvement by considering incorporating some of the foods and techniques listed in this article.

Decrease Heartburn With Natural Antacid Foods

The natural antacid food that works best for you is going to depend on your situation. It may take a bit of trial and error to find the solution that works best for you. The following five nutritious options are good places to start to help acid indigestion or heartburn.  Consider the one that best fits your diet and experiment to see which combination or one works best for you.

Top Foods to Decrease Heartburn

  1. Increase Fiber: A high fiber diet has been known to decrease heartburn for many people. You can get a high fiber diet by eating fruits, whole grains, beans, nuts, and vegetables. If you haven't had luck with the high fiber diet or you don't want to change your diet that drastically, there are some other choices that might work better for you.
  2. A Banana a Day: Bananas are considered to be a natural antacid food. A banana a day keeps the heartburn away for some people. On the other hand bananas are considered to be high in potassium so if you are already on a potassium supplement, you should consult your doctor before changing your diet.
  3. Live Cultured Yogurt: Another natural antacid food is yogurt. Yogurt is one of the recommended foods if you have heartburn problems when you are sleeping. The live cultures of the yogurt help support the digestive tract with healthy bacteria to assist in breakdown of food.
  4. Ice Cream: Ice cream is also a natural antacid food and also should be eaten 2 hours before bedtime for people who suffer from nighttime heartburn. When eating ice cream, you need to be careful about what flavor you eat. Chocolate and peppermint can weaken the lower esophageal sphincter muscle (LES) that is supposed to keep the stomach acid from backing up into the esophagus. A soothing vanilla or dolce de leche ice cream works great for most people.
  5. Milk: If the natural antacid relieving foods mentioned above don't help you, milk is considered a natural antacid drink. A glass of milk before bed can soothe the stomach as well as cool the esophagus. The problem with this is if you have a weak LES muscle, as soon as you lay down some of the stomach acid will seep back into your esophagus or regurgitate.  The other side of the issue is to make certain you don't have an allergy to dairy products, in which case you may see additional discomfort with the use of dairy.  Check with your doctor or a knowledgable expert on how to test for food allergies to determine if this is you.

Suggestions and Tips to Reduce Heartburn

  • To combat regurtitation, some people have taken to sleeping on a pillow wedge. Pillow wedges keep the upper body inclined so that gravity helps to keep the acids in the stomach where they belong.
  • Eating your choice of yogurt or ice cream two hours before you go to sleep can neutralize stomach acids and effectively decrease your heartburn.
  • In addition you shouldn't eat any acidic foods such as citrus, peppermint, tomatoes, and peppers two hours before you go to bed.
  • You also shouldn't drink any caffeine, citrus juice, or tomato juice in the two hours before you go to bed if you have problems with heartburn while you are sleeping.

Natural antacid foods can help many people control their heartburn but some people have to do more than just eat the right foods. If your heartburn strikes at night then it is advised to not eat 2 to 3 hours before you go to sleep and/or to sleep on a wedge.

If your heartburn hits when you're exercising then it is advisable to not eat 2 hours before you exercise. Some people find relief by simply drinking a glass of water after every meal to dilute their stomach acid.

You may have to try a few things before you find the perfect solution to controlling your stomach acid. The good news is that many people can keep the heartburn away just by eating natural antacid foods.
