Never Put These Foods In The Fridge

There are plenty of little food storage questions that we find ourselves thinking about while standing in the kitchen with a new bag of groceries. Of course, there are the basics that everyone can agree on like milk obviously stays in the fridge. Yet whether to put fruit in the fridge or how long to keep butter at room temperature before dinner is still up for debate. Some food items, however, are much easier to manage. Help these foods maintain freshness in your kitchen!

Never Put These Foods in the Fridge

Tomatoes: Putting tomatoes in the fridge makes them lose their flavor. The fridge's cold air stops them from ripening, which is what increases flavor. The cold temperature also breaks down the membranes inside the fruit causing it to have an odd texture when you're ready to eat it. Keep tomatoes in a bowl on the counter top. 

Basil: Basil will quickly absorb the smells of the food around it, so it's best to leave it out, especially if you can set it in a cup of fresh water. Putting basil in the fridge will make it wilt much faster than it should. 

Onions: The moisture inside the fridge will make onions soft and moldy, so try to keep them in a dry, cool place. Note: you should keep onions and potatoes stored separately. When stored together, they both go bad faster. 

Potatoes: The cold temperatures inside the fridge make the potato starch turn into sugar more quickly. It is best to put them inside a paper bag in a cool (and preferably dark) place. Paper is better than plastic so the potatoes can breathe. 

Garlic: Garlic will start to sprout faster in the fridge, so it is best to keep it on the counter in a dry, cool place. 

Avocados: If you want the avocado to ripen, don't place it in the fridge. If you have a few days before you're going to use it and it needs a bit of ripening, pop it in the fridge. 

Bread: The fridge is known for drying out breads. Sandwich bread that you plan to eat within a few days can stay in the fridge. If you plan to eat other typs of bread within four days, leave it out and freeze the rest. When you remove it from the freezer, let it defrost naturally to retain the most moisture. 

Olive Oil: Keep olive oil in a cool, dark place. The fridge makes it turn into a hard, butter-like consistency. 

Coffee: Coffee picks up the scent of items around it and no one wants leftover-scented coffee, so try to keep it in a cool, dark place. Larger quatieis can be stored in the freezer, but not in the fridge. 

Honey: Honey lasts forever, so just keep it tightly sealed in the pantry and you're good for the next 10 years. Putting it in the fridge may cause crystalization.
