nyny-day-3-5-tips-for-keeping-your-new-years-resolutions-videoIt's a new year and a new you. Many people will be looking to get in shape in 2013. And, taking it one step at a time can surely help your success rate. Literally, walking is one of the best forms of exercise and no special equipment is needed!

No matter what your New Year's resolutions may be, here are five tips to help you meet your New Year's resolutions to get in shape.

How to Follow Through With Your New Year's Resolutions

1. Rise and Shine and Walk

People are more likely to keep with a new exercise regimen if they perform it first thing in the morning. Start by setting your alarm 30 minutes earlier and then put on your shoes, proper clothing and take a walk. You'll be amazed how good you'll feel afterwards and the energy it brings all day long.

2. Walk Like a Man

Whether you saw Jersey Boys or not, the hit song "Walk Like a Man" had some good ideas. Stand tall and put one foot in front of the other. When you walk with tall posture, chest lifted and shoulders back, you'll put less stress on your lower back and work more muscles too.

3. Turn Around

Believe it or not, walking backwards help strengthen the muscles that support the back. If you walking backwards on a treadmill, start with a very low speed (like 2.2mph) and keep your feet on the sides until you're ready to take that first step. This is a great way to stretch out the front of the thighs after a long walk and take pressure off the lower back.

4. Buddy Up

Friends are great motivators and can help keep you on track. On those days that you just don't feel like working out, a friend's support will help you get out of bed and into your workout. But, remember that friends can be virtually there as well.
