Shonda Rhimes has devastated nearly an entire country with the axe of Patrick Dempsey from Grey’s Anatomy. After an 11-year run, Dr. Derek Shepherd died after being in a tragic car accident and being brought to a hospital where protocol was not followed.

His wife, Dr. Meredith Grey (Ellen Pompeo) pulled McDreamy off life support during the final moments and cries could be heard across the country.

How could Shonda do this, the dedicated fans of Grey’s Anatomy wondered? Thousands of fans took to Twitter to seek comfort during the difficult time of loss.

We still have Patrick Dempsey though, everyone!

And he spoke to Entertainment Weekly about his dramatic Grey’s exit. His work exit though, was less dramatic. It was "just another workday," said Dempsey. "It was very quiet. It was very poetic. I got in my car, got in rush-hour traffic, and two hours later I was home."

Dempsey’s end was somewhat foreseen throughout the 11th season of the show. He had been noticeably absent from six episodes and fans began anticipating a monumental moment. But even though there was slight preparation, fans were not mentally equipped for the hit they took on Thursday, and Dempsey understands. "

"Shepherd is a beloved character. People don’t want to lose him," Dempsey concurred.

"He’s been in their lives for over ten years. Things happen very quickly. We were like, ‘Oh, this is where it’s going to go.'"

The show’s creator, Shonda Rhimes, told Entertainment Weekly, "I never imagined saying goodbye to our 'McDreamy'– then again, none of us here at Grey’s Anatomy imagined any of the many journeys this show has taken us on. Now, Meredith and I are about to enter uncharted territory as we head into this new chapter of her life."

As for seeing Dempsey on the small screen again anytime soon?

"I would commit to a show that is 10 to 12 episodes, but 24 again… I don’t know if I would do that. It’s a very hard life. It’s financially rewarding, but there comes a point where, how much is enough, really?"
