The type of planter box is critical to healthy vegetation and seasonal growth. There are wood and plastic container vegetable gardens, however, wood is highly recommended to construct a garden box from. Wood planter box garden's allow for a more natural growth pattern, can be decorated to suit outdoor and indoor decorums, and are economical and last longer when exposed to natural elements. This is a special concern for patio, balcony and other outdoors planter box gardens that are exposed to year round seasonal conditions.

Plastic planter boxes, on the other hand, don't fair well exposed to natural elements, which makes them practical for indoor vegetable gardens or enclosed patios and balconies. Also, plastic garden boxes have a short lifespan when exposed to the sun, which often makes them brittle and hard to keep from cracking or breaking. The best part of plastic planters are they're light weight and easier to move around than wood planter boxes.

Choosing Plants for Your Planter Box

Remember certain vegetable spices, herbs or flowers can require either more or less attention when growing. So you want to make sure that all vegetables, herbs or flowers in the same planter box garden require the same care, treatment and soil.  For example, you don't want to mix vegetables that require watering at least once a week with vegetables that require watering every two weeks.  This means that the chance of over watering certain vegetables are increased and the probability of these vegetables surviving are low.

For this reason, segregation of vegetation is crucial. This also includes mixing and matching flowers with vegetables or vegetables with herbs or any combination where the outcome may be detrimental to one species of vegetation sharing the same planter box.

Another very critical factor to keep in mind is mixing and matching vegetation with different seasonal requirements.  For example: mixing flowers or vegetables that grow in the winter with spring or summer blooming vegetation. This is surely an unfriendly environment that will impact the success of your home garden box. So avoid this at all cost.  To guarantee a successful vegetable garden box make sure the vegetation selection planted in the same box is seasonally compatible.

Filling Your Planter Box

Soil is also a key component to the success of garden vegetable boxes. Choosing the right soil, fertilizer and nutrients contributes to the health of the vegetation as well as the vibrant colors for flowers, freshness of vegetables and potency of herbs and spices.   It's recommended to line the bottom of any planter box with a layer of compost, then cover with appropriate soil that has been thoroughly mixed with premium fertilizer.
