Secret Code Of Rainbows For Moms

Share It

Courtney Mixon was out shopping when she came across a woman wearing a "You're looking at a rainbow" shirt featuring a rainbow heart over her obviously pregnant belly.  Courtney immediately felt connected to the mom-to-be. It was not because she was pregnant or because she is a mom, but because Courtney knew the woman had had a miscarriage and was now pregnant again.

How did she know? Because that rainbow on a round belly or adorning a onesie or baby hat means more than just a colorful array. To many woman it is code for the beauty after a storm in their pregnancy journey.

A "rainbow baby" has become the affectionate term to describe a child born after a miscarriage or a stillbirth. Rainbows have always been a symbol of hope and good fortune. The term "rainbow baby" is supposed to describe the hope that comes after a storm.

Out of 4.4 million confirmed pregnancies each year, almost a million end in a miscarriage or stillbirth. That means one million women every year experience the loss of a child. Traditionally, those moms (and dads) have mourned in silence, but thanks to new mommy and baby products sporting the ROYGBIV colors, moms can share their painful story without ever speaking a word.

For Courtney, seeing the rainbow was a shared bond she couldn't let go. In a Facebook post, Courtney described how she told the woman she loved her shirt and the mom-to-be's response was "that her husband was hesitant for her to wear it (because people wouldn’t know what it meant).” Courtney shared her own story and the two strangers hugged right there in the aisle of the craft store.
