Are you feeling the seventies vibe in the fashion air? Similar to last year’s Me Decade revival, certain staples of 1970s fashion - think flared-leg jeans, colored denim, and floor-dusting jean skirts – are going to be huge again for this spring and summer. And while these retro styles may not totally edge out our beloved skinnies and boyfriend jeans, we are definitely seeing a continual style evolution toward more funky and feminine looks these days. Better yet, with some dutiful digging, you may be able to find vintage versions of these trends at the discount store or flea market, and save yourself major moolah!
If you usually live in skinnies, don’t despair - you don't have to toss them quite yet. Staying current will be about adding variety to your jeans wardrobe – and keeping your accessories modern, so you don’t look dated.
Here are three major trends in seventies-inspired denim that I see coming for spring and summer 2012. When indulging in any of these, remember to keep your accessories modern, so you don’t risk looking dated.
Colored Denim
Whether it’s brightly colored reds and greens or pastel pinks and yellows, colourful denim – a trend that hit full force in the summer of 2011 - is definitely back for another go this year. Choose red jeans for a celebrity vibe – go the Rachel Bilson route and pair them with a crisp white tee, boyfriend blazer and oversized scarf - or wear whatever shade of the rainbow makes you smile. Just keep the rest of your outfit to more muted tones, so you don't look like fruit punch. Brands offering this trend include Paige Premium, J Brand and True Religion.
Flare Jeans
Sorry, skinny jean lovers. If you care about being up-to-the-minute in fashion, flares are the new go-to denim style for the coming seasons. The new wide-leg jeans are easy and breezy for warmer days, and look chic in a variety of washes. Pair these pants with a wide floppy hat and strappy high-heeled sandals for instant elegance. If you're a diehard skinny jeans gal, ease yourself into this trend with the Skinny Micro Flare by Joe's Jeans.
Floor-length Denim Skirt
The long denim skirt is a major fashionista wish-list item this year. The best versions of this so-hip-it-hurts trend look authentically vintage – think light wash, five-pocket design, distressing, and button-fly closure. The designer versions are astoundingly expensive –Alexander’s Wang’s goes for upwards of $350 – so this is a good one to try and find at your local second-hand emporium.
