In honor of the upcoming holiday, we've asked our contributors to share what makes them feel lucky. Fashion blogger Courtney Hawkins (a.k.a. The Simple Glamazon) shares her version of #myluckycharms today...
Usually when I think of St. Patrick’s Day, I think of plans with girlfriends for a night out filled with dinner and green-themed drinks. As time progresses and priorities change, the instances of girls-night change due to other commitments. Now, when I think about St. Patrick’s Day, I think about what makes me feel lucky and happy. The good news is that there a lot of things that make me feel very lucky.
I have six nephews, four of whom were born in March. One of my nephews was born on St. Patrick’s Day! I always think that’s pretty neat because it’s easy to remember.
As I get older, I start to notice things about my body that were not there before. Certain joints ache more so than others and the “bounce back” after a night out is not as quick as it used to be. Also, when I turned 30 my metabolism came to a screeching halt! With all that in mind, I do my best to exercise regularly and eat healthy. I know my aches and pains are just a part of life, so to say that I rarely go to the doctor is something I feel very lucky about. If and when I feel a little ill, a very long nap and a day of pajamas and nonsense television seems to be what the doctor would have ordered! I know there are a lot of people in the world who have it way worse so I consider myself VERY lucky to have a clean bill of health.
I read somewhere that there is large portion of the population who are unhappy with their jobs or careers. Fortunately, that doesn’t include me. I love what I do for a living! Working in the learning and development industry has given me so much insight on people and has forced me to gain an immense amount of patience. Adult education is something so spectacular. Each day I get to see individuals in my workshops discover something about themselves they hadn’t realized was already there. Or they pull on a strength they always knew they had but never had a chance to use. I feel very lucky to be a part of someone’s professional growth on a regular basis.
My Sense of Style
Getting dressed in the morning is something I look forward to. There are a lot of people who dread looking into their closets to find something to wear each morning. For me, that’s the best part of the day! I look at it like playing dress up each and every day. What will I wear? What energy do I want to exude today? What do I want people to think? I’ve always had a love for style and fashion so every day I feel lucky that I’m able to wear clothes that I love.
Someone once told me, “Courtney, you always see the silver lining in everything.” Well I hope that’s true! I do my best to look on the bright side because I know it could always be worse. I try to put my life into perspective. I’m not wealthy by any means, but I do have food in my fridge, clothes on my back, and a career I enjoy. Things are not always easy but I know I’m a pretty lucky lady, and for that, I am truly grateful.
