Sofia Vergara was the butt of the Academy’s joke.
The Emmys are supposed to be a fun filled night of talented and well-dressed people. Last night’s 66th Annual Emmy Awards were no different. Small screen stars (and some big screen ones) were all in attendance to celebrate the achievements of their fellow actors, directors, and writers. Things seemed to be running smoothly, until about halfway through the show.
Sofia Vergara took the stage to introduce Bruce Rosenblum, the president of the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences. He asked Vergara to step on a revolving platform and pose while he made a speech about the good-doings of the Academy.
While Vergara seemed to play along and enjoy herself, the audience wasn’t so thrilled. Many people criticized the skit for being sexist and accused the Academy of objectifying the 42-year-old actress.
Upon hearing these rumors, Sofia Vergara spoke her mind to Entertainment Weekly.
"I think its absolutely the opposite. It means that somebody can be hot and also be funny and make fun of herself. I think it's ridiculous that somebody started this - I know who she was - who has no sense of humor [and should] lighten up a little bit."
Sofia Vergara is unarguably one of the most beautiful women in Hollywood. But the character she plays on the Emmy-winning show, Modern Family, proves that she’s much more than just a pretty face. With her quick wit, sultry accent, and ridiculous stunts, Vergara has paved her way in the industry as our favorite funny girl.
Based on her role choices, it’s no surprise that Vergara would agree to this skit. The fact that it was so overtly sexist was (probably?) the point of the joke. However, most of the audience did not find it funny.
Like all televised blunders, the idea may have been great in theory, but very poor in execution.
What did you think of Sofia’s display?
