Sofia Vergara opens up about her fight against thyroid cancer at a recent fundraising event.
The voluptuous Colombian actress, 42, opened up about her fight against thyroid cancer while attending the 2014 Angel Ball, a gala celebration in which stars and philanthropists get together and raise money and awareness for cancer research. Vergara looked gorgeous as always on the red carpet outside of the event and stopped to talk to Entertainment Tonight about her own personal reasons for supporting the event.
"I had thyroid cancer some years ago," Vergara revealed. "But it's not only because of that. [Cancer] is such a horrible sickness that we all should help anyways, even if you have never had it." But luckily, she has her Modern Family crew to stand by her side, whom she called her "family."
In 2000 when Vergara was 28 years old, she was diagnosed with thyroid cancer. She had her thyroid removed and underwent radioactive iodine therapy. Since then, she continues to take medications to battle hypothyroidism.
The inspiring actress also has become the poster woman for thyroid cancer awareness. She has teamed up with the Follow The Script campaign, which aims to educate individuals about hypothyroidism and thyroid cancer.
"It brought me down to earth and to realize the important things," she said. "Also, I started taking more care of my body, to be more healthy."
Other stars who went to the event earlier this week to show their support included Paris and Nicky Hilton, Kris Jenner and Jamie Foxx.
