Use food you already have and spend your money on the fun stuff!
With the first day of Spring comes two dreaded words - Spring Cleaning. This year, instead of tossing old items from the deep abyss known as the back of the pantry or freezer, use old food items for new meals. Then, spend your extra cash to buy yourself a new outfit (or three). Check out our list of common food items that get lost in the shuffle. Follow these food related money saving tips and before you know it, you’ll be sporting a great new pair of sandals.
You will be surprised how easy it is to save money on your grocery bill by following the tips below!
You grab a can or two every time it’s on sale and they end up piling up and taking up space. Grab the low-sodium chicken noodle or simple tomato soup and use it to spice up a better meal. Try sautéing veggies and adding them to the soup. You could also chop up some garlic and add some cheese to tomato soup. Now you have two things: a yummy lunch and a cleaner pantry – all without spending a dime!
This is a freezer staple in my house. Burger patties are quick and simple and I stock up when I’m (pretending to be) on a strict no-carb diet. Defrost the patties and crumble them up for tacos, enchiladas or lasagna. That’s three easy meals, made out of something you’d probably have thrown away anyway.
If you’re like me, frozen veggies have overtaken your freezer. Maybe I like to think I’m healthier than I actually am, but I just don’t use them as often as I buy them. Free up freezer space fast by making stirfry. Combine a few of those frozen veggie packs and add a bit of chicken (which you probably already have in the freezer). Lastly, check the fridge for any almost-empty dressings. Free up space on the refrigerator door by using these dressings to add extra flavor to your stirfry dish.
There you go. That’s six simple meal ideas – for free. There are plenty of ways to use what you already have to make easy meals, so keep digging through the pantry or freezer and make the most of it! Then, reward yourself with a new bag. You deserve it; think how much money you saved!
