Playing sports is something almost everyone enjoys. Whether it is an individual or team sport, there is competition, camaraderie, and clowning. It seems that the participants believe they are at Wimbledon, The Master's, or the World Series judging by how hard they compete. Unfortunately, there are those who compete hard and then end up wheezing at the end of the day. Sports related asthma is no joke. When you get done with the physical exercise, you have to take a puff from an inhaler. Coping With Sports Related Asthma

People who are diagnosed with asthma already, are the most common sufferers of sports related asthma. A second group, those who have allergic rhinitis (hay fever) also have a high incidence of sports related asthma. It is uncommon among people who have no history of asthma, but it can still occur.

It is not known exactly what causes the condition, but there are theories. Some think that the warm humid environment of the lungs is upset by excessive air flow. This increased deep, quick breathing dries out the air passageways, and causes the irritation and swelling common in asthma. Another theory is that blood flow increases to the lungs to warm them because of cold air flooding in. Both of these seem to cause spasms in the bronchi. The effect is worsened during cooler weather. Those who participate in cold weather sports are more likely to suffer from sports related asthma. However, there are some safe sports for adults with asthma.

It is possible to play rugged sports while suffering from asthma. However, since it is more likely that you will suffer an asthma attack during cold weather, it is best to reduce activity during this time. You need to exercise sports safety for adults with asthma. This means taking an inhaler with you. Make sure that your teammates know about your illness, and what to do if you are having difficulty. Swimming is a great exercise for people with asthma. It can be strenuous, but the air is humid, and the body temperature remains constant. Short burst activities like baseball/softball and golf are better than basketball or tennis which are more sustained. Sports related asthma can occur any time you are not vigilant. So besides choosing the activity wisely, always be cautious.

There are also ways to combat sports related asthma. Follow your doctors instructions. If s/he says that your asthma is too severe for certain activities, pay attention. It is better to watch from the sidelines than risk a severe attack. Always carry a full inhaler with you. It wouldn't be pleasant to discover that your inhaler doesn't work at the moment you are having an asthma episode during sports . If you are going to participate in strenuous exercise when it is cold, find some place where you can warm up quickly.

There is one activity that most experts say to avoid if you are asthmatic - scuba diving. Having an asthma attack in those conditions could very likely prove deadly. Any other sport is fair game if you take the recommended precautions.
