Starting Your Own Family Traditions

starting-your-own-family-traditionsTips On Your Own Family Traditions

Having a family of your own is something everyone treasures as they get older. It can bring you immense joy and pride to watch your children and their children develop into wonderful adults. Starting your own family traditions is a very popular trend, with more parents aiming to keep that family bond going strong for generations.

Four Traditions Worth Starting This Year

Camping

Packing up the car and heading to a remote location by a lake sounds great, doesn't it? It can be a time to teach your children how to survive with very few amenities and how to truly enjoy the great outdoors. All can have fun when it comes to hanging out together around a warm campfire and telling stories. Camping is all about making memories and spending time together with out the distractions of modern technology. Bring items for kids of all ages to entertain themselves with (like board games, books, and outdoor equipment like Frisbees and balls) and ensure you will be having good weather when you arrive.

2. Meal Time is the Best Time

Everyone adores a delicious meal. Why not take a few hours out at least once per week to have an old fashioned family dinner? You can create themed dishes, or make entrees based on the seasons. A special dinner can bring the whole family together even just by preparing the meals each week. You can always take an hour afterward to sit around and discuss the busy week you all have had and coordinate schedules for the days ahead.

3. Support Your Local Sports Teams

This can be a lot of fun, especially if your city has a winning team. Any sport from football to basketball, high school level to professional, can be great family fun. The type of sport doesn't matter as long as you are all spending time together. You can dress in team colors and order the tasty snack foods at the venues, even take memorable photos at each game with the scores! Cheering for the local team is a great time to teach your kids how to be good winners and gracious losers.

4. Family Photos

At some point in every family's lifespan, there usually seems to be a photo opportunity. Maybe when the kids are still babies and can be dressed up in adorable apparel, or when you may be headed to the beach. Believe it or not, many families opt to have a local photographer grab some excellent shots of them and their family members while on vacation or at a dinner out on the town. The traditional Christmas or Easter themed family photos are always good classic choices as well. Just make sure that getting a family portrait is an annual event so you can track the way the family grows and changes over the years.

Additional Family Traditions

There are other things you can do with your children and cousins as they get older. You can make photo books or time capsules and bury them in the yard. You can all visit some of the founding members of your family at cemeteries and pay your respects while showing your children where they ancestors are buried should they want to keep that up as adults. Attending church masses together and visiting those less fortune in homes and shelters are additional excellent things to do as families that everyone can grow from.
