Planning And Organizing A Successful Rummage Sale

  • Declutter

One of the very first things that you are going to need to do before you even begin planning your rummage sale is to declutter your house. Take the time to go through all the rooms in your home and sort everything from trash, keep, and sale.
  • Preparing For The Big Day

Now that you have decluttered your home you are ready to set a date for your big rummage sale. If you happen to find yourself without a lot of items to sell contact your family, friends, and neighbors and see if they would like to create a joined rummage sale. Once you have done this you can now begin to go through your rummage sale pile.
  • You need to place these items into three separate categories: The junk items that will go for real cheap, the medium value items that will fetch a fairly good price, and the high value items which are those items that will catch a great price. Once you have done this you are ready for the next step.
  • Pricing

As for pricing your items you will want to start with the junk items. Consider taking some of the items and combining them to get a better price. Take silverware and tape them together and utensils can be placed in a cup for a certain amount a piece. The items that you know will not bring a sale at all but are still to good to throw out you can consider placing in a free box. Every successful rummage sale has a free box. It may sound shocking but it is actually what draws the customers in.
  • Your medium priced items should be placed towards the middle of your sale. This will make the people want to stop and look more. Also the bigger medium priced items should be placed around the edges of the sale. Your higher dollar items are what is needed to draw in the customers. In knowing this these are the items that need to be placed at the front of your sale. This would include such things as furniture and lawn equipment. The jewelry and other small items should be placed on a table next to you so that you can keep a close eye on them. This will also make them have to walk through the whole sale to get to that table.

Having a successful rummage sale does not have to be a difficult task. If you follow all of the above steps you will find that you will have a very successful rummage sale. A final note would be to occassionally change things around so it appears that you have added more to the sale. This will help you gain even more customers some may even be a repeat customer from a few hours before.
