California is the state of the work out King/Queen. It doesn’t matter how old, what gender, whether people played sports in high school, college, or for the pros, everyone is in shape. With one day being more beautiful than the next, does the weather produce these athletes or do the athletes move to the weather?
While grabbing some roadside produce (another California bonus) I had the pleasure of meeting one of these work out Queens. People here are exceptionally nice. Everyone talks to everyone. This Queen was about 10 years older than I. Although the muscles weren’t ripping out of her shirt, she looked relatively fit in her biking attire.
“You will love it here if you like outdoor sports” she shared.
“I’ll bet,” I added.
Feeling pretty accomplished that I had completed two marathons myself, I chimed in that maybe someday I could join in.
“That would be great. Today we cycled about 75 miles. However, in two weeks we have an Ironman coming up if you are interested.”
For those of you not familiar an ironman consists of a full marathon (26.2 miles), followed by a 2.4-mile swim, and then a 112-mile bike.
I looked at her dumbfounded. It was time to go back to the gym.
It wasn’t that I’m not in shape, I work out 6 days a week. I needed a real trainer, someone who understood the muscles, how to work them and how I could get the most out of the endless hours that I had invested in my work out program without pulling another muscle. What I was doing obviously wasn’t working.
Time to Meet with a Trainer...
Fast-forward two weeks, and I am feeling the pain. With a master in Kinesiology, my trainer Mike Emerson from Emerson Personal Training has worked muscles on my body that I never knew I had. I met him through the community I live in (Ruby Hill), where he is a personal trainer in our small gym. He took measurements and we will check our results in 8 weeks.
It is a science. I incorporate TRX, pyramids, and various other free weights until I can actually feel the muscles ripping underneath my skin. Maybe if they looked for a hulk replacement I might be in luck. He shared that he had taken his last client from a size 6/8 to a size 2 with only losing 2 pounds. Short of taping my mouth shut, I wasn’t seeing it in my future.
Our next step together would be to incorporate a nutritionist. Uh oh.
A Real Workout Defined
It has been two weeks since we started and I can already feel the difference. We work out three times a week, with yoga and cardio in between. My brave work out partner, Debbie, had only worked out 3 consecutive times in her life. I am seeing a reality show in her future.
The real test will come when I need to part ways with my daily chocolate chip cookie. Who knows if I could get past that, maybe another race was in my future.
