To Gym or Not to Gym

to-gym-or-not-to-gymTiming is Everything

We’ve all done it- procrastinated hitting the gym, saying we will simply “get to it later. “ Or, the ever so popular excuse that we, “don’t have time.”  Going to the gym can be a hassle, yes, but its benefits are life-changing if maintained along with a proper diet. Now, I am no doctor or personal trainer, but I do know that with even moderate exercise (it doesn’t have to be at a gym!) and a few tweaks of an unhealthy diet, the results can make a huge difference. With mothers especially, I am aware that time is precious, and most of it is devoted to the family (kudos to you moms!), but that doesn’t mean you can’t squeeze in time for yourself and your health!

Getting Started

I myself, find it sometimes difficult to find time for the gym. Being a student and  working fulltime, I can relate to mothers. By the time there is a moment to take a breather, we find ourselves right on the road again! But, we need to realize that with all of the responsibilities we take on, there needs to be “me-time.” The gym, for some, may seem like a chore. You may be nervous if it is your first time joining a gym (may I suggest finding a gym buddy?) or maybe you’re even a returning member (go you!). Wherever you’re starting off, give yourself some credit for even considering it! Know that you do not have to rush into it. Take your time in finding the best gym for you. There are a lot of gyms out there and they are not all the same. Do your research and know that you are doing your body a big favor.

An Alternative Route

If you are simply not a gym person, there are many other physical activities you can take part in. My personal favorites include yoga and hiking. Yoga is beneficial and, although challenging at first, can be addicting! Now, your first thought after reading “hiking,” may bring you to thoughts of snowy Himalayan or Everest peaks but I assure you, you can still get the benefits it provides by starting small. Another popular alternative is walking. The benefits of walking are endless and can be very enjoyable especially when taking part in group walks with friends or family. Set goals for yourself and again, do your research. Another great alternative involves something we all have, a living room! Thanks to workout DvD’s and on-demand videos, getting fit has never been more easy! Even if all you have is ten minutes a day, a few times a week, it benefits your health!

You Can do it!

Not everybody is a gym person, and that’s okay! Finding joy in a physical activity is the key and it will encourage you to stick with reaching your goal. Nobody says you have to get the perfect body, have abs like Cameron Diaz, or a booty like Pippa Middleton’s. Work out to please yourself and to find peace of mind. I wish you all the best in pursuing this idea if it’s ever crossed your mind. If it hasn’t, I hope this has triggered the thought. Sweat on!
