Mother’s Day is just around the corner, and many of you will be starting to wonder what to get your mom for Mother’s Day? I asked some mom friends what their favouritegifts were for Mother’s day, both to give and to receive. There were a few surprises, but all in all the answers were what I suspected they would be.

Top Gifts as Chosen By Moms

Flowers or flowering plants were near the top of the list, as were homemade gifts (remember the macaroni covered dish soap bottle that was spray painted and intended for use as a flower vase, likely for the buttercups or dandelions you picked out of the yard? Turns out mom’s do really like that stuff when made with love by their child’s sweet little hands!). Also popular was jewelry (mom’s rings or pendants) and other personal items such as bath products and lotions. Gift certificates for a massage, manicure, pedicure, or facial also seemed to be popular choices. I know of one group of moms who spent a day away from their families on mother’s day having a girl’s day out together as their gift. And guys, take note, a gift or card from you to the mother of your children, even if you are no longer together, is usually much appreciated.

The Number One Gift as Chosen by Moms

The number one thing that was mentioned for a Mother's Day gift was time. The predominant answer was that time with their own mothers and time with their children is the best gift. Some moms spoke of mother’s days past, and the fondest memories are of the things they did together, not of the gifts that changed hands. Others spoke of mothers who are no longer with them and how they wish they could have one more mother’s day with them. Some spoke of step-mothers or those who were like a mother to them and how they enjoy being able to celebrate them and their contributions to their lives.

If you don't live anywhere near your mom and can not be with her in person on Mother's Day, a phone call (or Skype chat) is the next best thing. A card coming in the mail is noted as an added bonus to a phone call.

My son often asks what he can get me for Mother’s Day, and I usually say I don’t need anything and just spending the day with family is all I want. This is usually met with an eye roll and a “but mom”, so I come up with one of the other items on the popular gift list. The one I usually come up with is a trip together to our local greenhouse to get some flowering plants for our yard – there’s that time together again! It has become something of an annual event, with several of the moms and kids in our families taking part.

One of my fondest Mother’s Day memories comes from the year the kids (my own plus my sister’s kids) decided they would make brunch for us at our home. I remember the food was outstanding, but the best part of the day was the laughter that was coming from the kitchen and the happiness we all felt just being together. You cannot buy that anywhere.

I wish you all a happy Mother’s Day filled with love, laughter, and the people who mean the most to you as I really believe that is the greatest gift of all. For more ideas, please visit Maternity Corner.
