The comedian is responsive after undergoing surgery on Sunday.
Tracy Morgan was in an accident involving six vehicles early Saturday morning on the New Jersey Turnpike. Morgan, 45, was returning from a show in Delaware, riding in his limo bus when the accident occurred. According to the comedian's representative, Tracy Morgan has been in critical condition.
"He has been more responsive today, which is an incredibly encouraging sign," according to his rep.
Morgan had surgery on his leg to repair broken bones and is recovering in the Intensive Care Unit at Robert Wood Johnson Hospital in New Brunswick, New Jersey.
Morgan "sustained a number of injuries including a broken leg, a broken femur, a broken nose, and several broken ribs," his rep said. It is expected that he will remain in the hospital for several weeks.
Unfortunately, Tracy Morgan's friend and fellow comedian James McNair, better known as "Jimmy Mack," died in the accident, and two other passengers were hurt.
The driver of a Walmart truck that was involved in the accident has been charged with one count of death by auto in addition to four counts of assault by auto. The driver turned himself into state police.
An eyewitness from the accident scene said that she saw the truck swerve and hit the other cars. This caused Morgan's vehicle to spin out of control and flip over. "It was a horrific sight," she said. "We just hope that everyone is okay."
Morgan's "family is tremendously overwhelmed and appreciative of the outpouring of love and support from his fans," his rep said.
